*Message - Hello!  Had a very nice visit to Termonfeckin in 2012 getting to know some distant relatives (McEvoys and others).  Was wondering if there's an easy way (via PayPal?) to send the money to join for a year.  I'd also love to be in touch with some more folks knowledgeable about the history of the area to further branch out my family tree.

Best,

Carl

(4th May 2016)

My name is Ciaran McDonnell. Your name was given to one of my brothers, Aodhan, by Noel Ross and to me by the local history librarian in Dundalk Library, who suggested that I talk to you about my family history. This is because my McDonnell ancestors were from Termonfeckin, a fact I did not know until late last summer. I wonder if you could help me throw some further light on these ancestors and, in particular, if you know of people currently alive to whom I may be related and/or from whom I might learn more.

I hope you will not mind if I give you some of my family details which may help to point in the right direction.

My father was Laurence McDonnell, born in December 1916 and raised in Kilsaran. He became a teacher, taught in Bush technical school in Cooley, later became principal in the Girls' Technical school in Dundalk and, when it merged with the Boys' Technical school, he was deputy principal of that merged school (now O'Fiach College) until 1979. His brother, John McDonnell, was a journalist and, later, editor of "Ireland's Own" for many years. John also wrote quite a number of plays such as "Wigs on the Green" and "All the King's Horses". Some of these were performed in the Abbey theatre in Dublin.

Patrick McDonnell, my grandfather, was baptised in Termonfeckin (in 1881).  Patrick is recorded in the 1911 census as having worked in a shop in Dunleer (this is now the Dunleer Inn). He married Annie Corcoran from Dillonstown, Drumcar (in February 1916) and they lived in Kilsaran from about 1916 where they had a shop across from the Church. He died in 1946. Annie died in 1978.

Patrick's parents, my great-grandparents, were Laurence McDonnell (born about 1855) and Anne Kelly of Cannonstown: Patrick's baptismal certificate says Anne Reilly, but the marriage certificate of Laurence is to Anne Kelly, in January 1877. Both the 1901 and 1911 census show only one Laurence McDonnell in Termonfeckin, a widower. He was an agricultural worker in 1901 and a harbour employee in 1911. In the 1901 census, he has adult children living with him in Termonfeckin but my grandfather had already moved out; by 1911, he lives on his own. I can find nothing at all regarding my grandfather's siblings and who their descendants - if any - were. I would love to meet any such descendant-cousins. I would imagine that someone must have some knowledge of them.

(There is another Laurence McDonnell who was born in Termonfeckin, son of John McDonnell and Mary Curran of Cannonstown and he was baptised on 13/08/1846. The sponsors were Peter Reynolds and Anne McDonnell. This Laurence is recorded as having died in 1870).

My great-great-grandparents, Patrick McDonnell and Margaret Reynolds who lived in Ganderspark, were married on November 20th, 1850 in Termonfeckin.

Further back than that I am not sure. I have been in contact with an American lady, Deborah Stevens, who is a 2nd cousin of Michael McDonnell of Cannontown farm. She thinks that my great—great grandfather, Patrick, may have been the son of Laurence McDonnell who was married to Jane McCann and that he was a brother of her ancestor, Anthony McDonnell. This may well be the case - and it fits what we know - but it is merely speculation on both our parts. However, if it is correct, then the first names of my ancestors from my 3 x great-grandfather to my father were Laurence, Patrick, Laurence, Patrick and Laurence Patrick (my father) which fits the old tradition of naming one's eldest son after one's father.

I have looked at your excellent site, TermonfeckinHistory.ie and have gone through it in some detail. I have also read through the copies of the Termonfeckin Historical Society in the Dundalk library and examined the transcriptions you made of the Termonfeckin graves. I see that I am related to Captain Joseph Reynolds and to the McDonnell brothers who served at sea with him.

My grandfather is buried in KIlsaran. I do not know where his father/mother and grandfather / grandmother are buried, although I (now) presume it is in Termonfeckin. I wonder if the Laurence McDonnell who died 24/11/1930 (in grave 255 in your list of graves) is my great-grandfather. He would have been 76 or so, if this is the correct person - or does it refer to another person? If "his mother Mary-Ann died 9-7-1930" refers to that Laurence, then it cannot be my great-grandfather.

So, in summary, I have an incomplete list of some dates of births and marriages of some McDonnells and some snippets of other information, but not much else. I have no information on Anne Kelly (Reilly?) (Laurence's wife) and I would very much like to know much more about her family and about the Reynolds family.

I visited Termonfeckin in the late Autumn of last year and enquired in a local cafe/shop but no one knew anything or could suggest anyone to talk to other than to contact the local historical society.

So I would really appreciate hearing any information you might have about these McDonnell/ Kelly (Reilly?)/ Reynolds families or even if you could just point me in the direction of people who would/might know, that would be wonderful.

About myself: I lived in Carlingford until I was 8 years of age and then in Dundalk, where I attended the Christian Brothers schools (I did my Leaving Certificate in 1969). I have lived in Dalkey, in south Co. Dublin for over 30 years. I have 3 adult children and 2 grand-children. I retired a few years ago.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

With kind regards,

Ciaran McDonnell

But I wonder about small Gravestone in Termonfeckin old Cemetery with just the inscription: "James Moore". Does anyone know who he was? Thank you. Best wishes Laurnce k Moore, Clogherhead, Drogheda.

Comment: Typically, what kind of weather can I expect the last week of October? The cottages on Windmill lane are where my great grandparents lived. Had this site had windmills in the past? How long have they been gone? Satellite pictures don’t show any in that vicinity. Where would the Roman Catholic chapel have been in 1881? My great grandparents were married wherever that might have been, before the Immaculate Conception church was built.

I know from the coat of arms above the door it was built in 1612 and there were 2 sets of initials one being OP. I think its a shame that this house seems to be overlooked especially with connections to Oliver Plunkett,Termonfeckin and Drogheda.

Comment: Research on my ancestor William Wye, husband of Jane Brabazon, indicates he was not Rector of St Peter's Drogheda, as Burke's alleges. His father Mossom Wye was indeed Rector at Drogheda 1719-1727. William was briefly curate at Drogheda in 1713, and in 1717 went as an SPG missionary to America, where he upset many and finally married and settled as Rector, North Elk parish, Maryland. He married again and died in 1744. Apparently his first wife Jane B remained in Ireland and outlived him...

Comment: Jane Brabazon, wife of Rev. William Wye, does not appear to have gone to America with him in 1717 with her children. Her daughter's MI mentions her, and I believe she was still living in Drogheda in 1762 and died thereabouts. Does the THS have a death date for her?

Comment: I'm trying to find the marriage of Mary Carton and Francis Byrne. As Mary was born in Termonfeckin would I be correct in thinking that she would marry there even if she was working away from home? Francis was born in 1841 and Mary in 1851 and there first daughter was born (I think) in 1880, so a likely marriage would be between the late 1860\\\\'s and the late 1870s.

We don't know much about him other than he married his first wife in 1805 in the US, so he would have immigrated between 1777 and 1805. Thank you in advance for any info you may have, could you also include your sources?

Comment: Trying to trace Carton family, presumably from Termonfeckin. Back in 1800's William Carton married Alice Brodigan. Their children were Mary, Anne, William, John and Peter. I know that Mary married Francis Byrne and lived in Bray Co Wicklow. Their daughter, Anna, married Frederick Gordon Brown and eventully moved to Yeovil, Somerset in England with their daughters Marie and Hannah. Frederick converted to Catholicism. I have photograph of Carton children taken in 1943: Pat 3, Sean 2, Brenda 1. They might have been visiting family in Bray but would like to link the various generations.

Comment: Hi Termonfeckin - Does anyone know of any Taafe's from this area? I think my 3rd Great Grandfather - James Taafe 1817 - 1853 is buried there in the cemetary in plot # 176. Are there any Taafe' families still living in or around Termonfeckin? Doug Mills/ Taafe /Michigan

Comment: I am wondering if there are any records of a woman named Margaret McKeon (nee Pentone). She died in July 1929 per a letter from Father Henry Parlin to my grandfather. He referred to her as a cousin. Thanks for your help. She was from Donnellystown.
