Woods
On the 27th April [1896], in the Mater Misercordiae Hospital, Dublin, Peter Woods, Tullyard. Mr Woods had attained to a ripe age, within a few years of his eighth decade. Perhaps there was no man better known throughout his native county than Peter Woods of Tullyard. In him has departed a veteran of the Land War. Although well on in years at the time of the founding of the League, he threw himself into the movement with an energy and whole-heartedness which might shame many younger men arrayed beneath its banner.  The interment took place in the family burial ground in Ballymakenny on Thursday last. The remains enclosed in a massive coffin of polished oak, arrived by train at 11.30 a.m. A very large mourning cortege which included a numerous attendance of the priesthood, the Mayor, High Sheriff and other representatives of public bodies awaited its arrival. After the last prayers, the remains were committed to earth, to mingle with the dust of their kindred. RIP.
(Drogheda Argus, 2/5/1896)

  1. The following weeks Drogheda Argus (25/1/1879) had the following piece regarding Mrs Levins’ burial: “Dispute in a Churchyard. On Sunday a dispute as to the right of interment took place in Monknewtown churchyard at the interment of Mrs Levins of Termonfeckin. The friends of parties interred in the ground, where a grave was opened for her, resisted the right of sepulchre therein. Ultimately, after much altercation, the grave intended for her was closed in and a new one opened in which the interment took place.
